Control+Alt+Delete Was a Mistake

Control+Alt+Delete
Bill Gates: 'Control+Alt+Delete' Was a Mistake

Bill Gates recently admitted that the familiar          "Control+Alt+Delete" command was a "mistake."

During a far-reaching discussion at Harvard on Sept. 21, Gates was questioned about why the architects of the PC decided to go with the Control+Alt+Delete command. He said the decision was actually made by IBM.
"We could've had a single button, but the guy who did the IBM keyboard design didn't want to give us our single button," Gates said. "It was a mistake."
That guy, as GeekWire pointed out, is David Bradley, who designed the original IBM PC. During IBM's 20th anniversary of the IBM PC, Bradley said Control+Alt+Delete came about when PC architects were "trying to solve a development problem." While testing software, it would often freeze, requiring a reboot. As a result, Bradley created a shortcut, which was Control+Alt+Delete.
Developers "originally intended it to be an Easter egg," Bradley continued, but news of the shortcut caught on. "It was like a five-minute job," he said, "I didn't realize I was going to create a cultural icon when I did it."
He then quipped that while "I may have invented it, but I think Bill made it famous."
"We did some very clever things" when developing the PC, Gates said last week, but Control+Alt+Delete was not one of them.
Gates went into a bit more detail about why such a command is necessary, regardless of the keyboard configuration. "When you turn your computer on, you're going to see some screens and eventually type your password in, you want to have something you do with the keyboard that is signaling to a very low level of the software – actually hard-coded in the hardware – that it really is bringing in the operating system you expect," Gates said.
The hour-long chat delved into the rise of Microsoft, Gates's current philanthropic efforts, his friendship with Warren Buffett, and more. The Control+Alt+Delete part of the discussion comes in around 16:30 in the video below.

iOS 7 - 11 Ways To Improve Battery Life

11 Ways To Improve Battery Life

Your iPhone's new operating system comes with plenty of advantages, but iOS 7's not without its drawbacks. Battery life just ain't quite what you'd want it to be, but we've got some tips to squeeze the most out of that sucker and stay juiced all day long. iOS 7 comes with a whole bunch of new features that are handy if you need/want them. If you don't, they're just eating away at that precious battery life behind the scenes, and give you exactly zero help for your trouble. So shut 'em down.

IOS7

1. Turn off parallax Parallax is fun, but it's the definition of "extra." And maybe it even makes you dizzy. Who needs it? Not you. You can turn it off in accessibility settings, by going to Settings>>General>>Accessibility and setting "Reduce Motion" to on.

2. Turn off AirDrop/Bluetooth. if you're not going to use it  AirDrop is great when you are AirDropping. The rest of the time it's just fidgeting in its seat, looking for another device to play with. Turning it off is easy, just swipe up your Control Center, and hit the toggle.

3. Stop searching for Wi-Fi. There's no need to have your phone searching for Wi-Fi when there's no trusted network in sight. You'll save yourself some trouble if you get in the habit of turning of Wi-Fi from the Control Center when you leave the house. Alternatively, you can go to Settings>>Wi-Fi and turn "Ask to Join Networks" to off. This way your phone will hope on Wi-Fi's it knows, but won't look around for more without direct orders.

4. Disable location services (for apps that don't need it). Google Maps needs to know where you are, yes. But Facebook? Hop over to Settings>>Privacy>>Location Services to get a full list of the apps that are asking about where you are. You can probably turn off about half, and cut down on a lot of GPS polling.

5. Turn off background app updates. Immediate app updates are rarely a huge deal, but having enough battery can be. Go to Settings>>iTunes & App Store and then scroll down. You'll see "Updates" under "Automatic Downloads." Turn it off. Just don't forget to stop by the App Store and update manually now and then.

6. Turn off background app refreshing. The brutal downside of good multitasking is running things in the background (duh). But if you go to Settings>>General>>Background App Refresh, you can disable background-runnin' for the apps that aren't important. Or all of them if you want to go all the way.

IOS 7

7. Disable auto-brightness. Chances are, auto-brightness keeps you more well-lit than you need to be. You can shut it off and get your mood-lighting on by going to Settings>>Wallpapers & Brightness and flipping the toggle. While you're there, crank that backlight alllll the way down, or as far down as you can handle. If you step outside, that's what the Control Center is for.

8. Go on a push notification diet. Not every app needs to push its notifications; that stuff takes power. Go to Settings>>Notification Center and scroll down to the "Include" section. Then go on a toggling spree.

Don't push; fetch. If your email isn't that important, or you have a couple accounts, go turn the low-priority ones to fetch instead of push. This one is pretty dependent on how often you get emails and how crucial they are, so you'll have to feel it out, but you can set to fetch in Settings>>Mail, Contacts and Calendar>>Fetch New Data

9. Turn off Siri's "Raise to Speak" feature. If you want Siri to eat less of your precious battery, turn off his or her "Raise to Speak" feature in Settings>>General>>Siri>>Raise to Speak. Or, if you're really not fond of the dude/lady turn him/her off to go dream of electric sheep.

IOS7

10. Turn off 4G (if times are tough). Disabling 4G is going to hurt a little but, but desperate times can call for desperate measures and LTE is a battery-burner. You can choke off the data-hose by going to Settings>>Cellular>>Enable LTE/Enable 4G

11. And treat your battery right in general. But even without all these tweaks, it pays to treat your lithium-ion battery right from the start, especially if you have a new gadget. Just keep on scrolling down for our tips and tricks that'll work for any phone.

Sagrada Familia's endless construction

Watch the Sagrada Familia's endless construction come to a close

Antoni Gaudi's masterpiece to be completed in 2026, nearly 150 years after construction began

gaudi sagrada familia

More than a century has passed since construction began on the Sagrada Familia, the ornate Barcelona church designed by famed architect Antoni Gaudi, and it will be another 13 years before it's finished. This week, the architects responsible for finishing the basilica published a video animation of what the Sagrada Familia will look like in 2026, when construction is expected to be completed.
The video, embedded above, visualizes the various additions that will be made to the church in the coming years, as architect Jordi FaulĂ and his team continue their march skyward. It also puts the scale of the project in breathtaking perspective. The Sagrada Familia's central tower, when completed, will stand 566 feet above the ground, making it the tallest church in the world.
Antoni Gaudi died in 1926 at the age of 73, when he was run over by a tram. Nine architects have overseen the Sagrada Familia's construction since then, each facing significant hurdles. Gaudi left behind detailed plans for the basilica at the time, but they were destroyed ten years after his death, when a group of anarchists stormed the building during the Spanish Civil War. Completing the Sagrada Familia has therefore been difficult, but based on the video released this week, it's sure to be even more impressive in its final form.

LATEST PRODUCTS OF SONY

The amazing products of Weird Sony

Gallery Photo:

For all its successes (and failures) over the decades as a mainstream consumer electronics company, Sony has always cultivated an alter ego — a weird place where crazy, off-kilter designs and product ideas have been allowed to come to market, even when they're anything but a guaranteed commercial success. This is Weird Sony.
To commemorate the launch of Weird Sony's latest products — the QX10 and QX100 lens cameras — we wanted to take a walk back through some of the most amazing, bizarre, and unlikely devices that the company has ever made. Some have helped shape the industry, some have helped shape Sony, and some have simply come and gone. All, needless to say, are weird.

QRIO. Billed as a humanoid counterpart to the better-known AIBO dog, QRIO went through several iterations but was never sold.

SCD-1. Sony had intended Super Audio CD to be the eventual successor to the ubiquitous Compact Disc. iTunes had other plans, but SACD exists even today as a niche product revered for its high resolution. The first SACD player, the SCD-1, was an over-engineered (and overpriced) work of art.

Clie PEG-VZ90. Sony's final Palm OS-powered product, the VZ90, was a proper sendoff: it had a color OLED display, a rarity in 2004.

XEL-1. The design of the world's first production OLED television made it impossible to mistake for anything else. At just 11 inches, the $2,500 price tag made it little more than a novelty.

VAIO UX series. Long before tablets went mainstream, Sony tried its hand at an almost-pocketable PC running Windows. It even had a fingerprint scanner and, on some models, support for 2G data.

Sountina NSA-PF1. Described as a "column of music" that radiated audio in every direction, the PF1 was covered in leather and cost $10,000.

eMarker. This pocketable device was little more than a clock in disguise: you would press its button when you heard a song on the radio that you liked; plugging it in to your PC later allowed you to see what was playing at the time the button was pressed. It failed at retail and was eventually recalled.

Clie PEG-NR70V. While Palm made conservative, business-friendly PDAs, licensee Sony went the opposite direction. Of its wild Palm OS-powered Clie line, perhaps the NR70V is the best-known: it was unapologetically enormous and had a swiveling camera and display, a full keyboard, and gorgeous HVGA resolution.

AIBO. Though the four-figure price tag kept it out of reach for most people, robot dog AIBO was a fixture of Sony's twilight years as the most dominant consumer electronics company on the planet. The last model was discontinued in 2006.

Odo. A series of unreleased (but functional) design concepts, Odo devices were intended to be as environmentally friendly as possible: the Odo digital camera, for instance, was charged simply by spinning it.

Tablet P. Sony's dual-screen clamshell Android tablet was roundly panned as a terrible product, but — if nothing else — it was interesting.

Data Discman DD-10. It's hard to imagine reading a book on it, but that's exactly what Sony intended you to do on its Data Discman line, which featured an "Electronic Book" logo over a decade before the advent of the E Ink readers we know today. Small discs — similar to the more popular audio MiniDiscs — were loaded with dictionaries, translators, and novels.

MDR-R10. Occasionally cited as one of the best pairs of headphones ever made, the oddly-shaped R10 retailed for four figures in 1988 and has only appreciated in value since then.

ICF-7500. This AM / FM radio was really two products in one: the right side could be disconnected from the left to lose the loudspeaker and become a portable headphone-only receiver.

Rolly. Who could forget the Rolly? Perhaps the most bizarre product Sony has ever made, this egg-shaped device was a digital music player that rolled around and flashed in sync to the audio. It was a confusing concept, and the $400 MSRP didn't help.

First Windows 8.1 ad features the return of the Start button

First Windows 8.1 with Start button

Windows 8.1 start button ad

The removal of the Windows 8 Start button last year turned out to be a hot-button issue for users of Microsoft's latest operating system. Following a range of feedback from customers, Microsoft is now preparing to release Windows 8.1 on October 18th with a Start button. The latest OS update also includes optional changes to boot to desktop and disable hot corners, but the Start button is a permanent addition that users can not switch off.
AD ALSO HIGHLIGHTS BOOT TO DESKTOP
Microsoft is choosing to highlight the button return in a new Windows 8.1 ad. After launching a "Windows Everywhere"campaign back in June, the latest Windows 8.1 ad follows a similar pattern. It highlights the ability to start up to the desktop (boot to desktop) and "hit the start button to flip back and forth" between the desktop and "Metro" Start Screen. Similarly, it also ends by featuring a Windows tablet, PC, and Surface.
At Intel's developer forum recently, Microsoft's head of marketing, Tami Reller, revealed that the company's August activations for Windows 8 were the highest so far. Microsoft has been focusing on back to school promotions and it's gearing up for new PCs and its own Surface 2 release ahead of the holidays. After Surface and Windows tablets got off to a slow start last holiday, Microsoft has partnered up with Best Buy and some European retailers to create Windows Stores inside retail locations. The company clearly hopes the retail presence and new ads will help convince consumers to opt for a Windows tablet this fall.
